How we picked these toys

This is a research guide. We built this shortlist from manufacturer specifications, retailer listings, and published reviews from Wirecutter, parenting review sites, and bike reviewers, and we read those reviews in full. We have not bought or hands-on tested the specific products on this page, and the guide claims no testing of them.

Play at this age spreads across the floor of a real house. Towers go up in the living room, games land on the kitchen table, and bikes live by the front door. The picks below fit that pattern: open-ended building toys, games a preschooler can finish in one sitting, and kits with pieces sized for small hands.

Recall check: every product on this page was checked against the CPSC recall database and CPSC safety warnings on October 25, 2026. No product listed here has an active CPSC recall or safety warning for the model named. The woom recall from 2023 covers woom ORIGINAL bikes from model years 2018–2021; the woom GO 3 listed here is a later model line and is outside that recall. Age grades below come from the manufacturer listing for each product.

MAGNA-TILES Classic 32-Piece Magnetic Construction Set

Model 2132 · ASIN B000CBSNKQ

MAGNA-TILES Classic 32-Piece magnetic tile set box and built shapes
Product image: Amazon product media.

Who it’s forThe Classic 32-piece set is the standard starter set in the MAGNA-TILES line. Flat shapes click together at the edges and stand up into boxes, towers, and garages. Published reviews return to the same point: the magnets hold a small structure together through a play session, and the tiles stay in use for years as builds get larger. The set covers ages 3 and up on the manufacturer listing, and it pairs with every other MAGNA-TILES set.

Swallowed magnets are dangerous, and magnetic toys should stay away from younger siblings who mouth objects.

Specifications
Age grade3 years and up (manufacturer)
Pieces32: 14 small squares, 2 large squares, 8 equilateral triangles, 4 right triangles, 4 isosceles triangles
MaterialMABS plastic, listed by the manufacturer as BPA, phthalate, and latex free
Model2132

Pros

  • Magnets hold 3D builds together during play, per published reviews
  • Metal rivets secure the magnets inside each tile
  • Compatible with all other MAGNA-TILES sets for later expansion
  • Open-ended play with no instructions to follow

Cons

  • 32 pieces run out fast on large builds
  • Cost per tile runs high across the brand
  • Storage box sold separately

It holds 484 pieces in 35 colors, with windows, eyes, wheels, and a green baseplate, plus a plastic box for storage. Published reviews treat the Classic boxes as the general-purpose starting point for LEGO: the bricks work with every LEGO set that follows, and an ideas booklet gives a new builder a few first models to copy.

Strider 14x Classic balance bike in blue
Product image: Strider retailer listing.

Who it’s forThe 14x is the larger Strider, built for a child who has outgrown a 12-inch balance bike or who is starting balance at four or five. It starts as a balance bike with a footrest, and the Easy Ride Pedal Kit (sold separately) converts the same frame to a pedal bike with a coaster brake. Two Wheeling Tots recommends the 14x for taller 3-year-olds through 5-year-olds, with fit set by inseam. Seat and handlebar heights adjust without swapping parts.

woom GO 3 · ASIN B0F7CF1TJ1

woom GO 3 16-inch kids bike in red
Product image: Kaufland retail listing.

Who it’s forThe GO 3 is a 16-inch pedal bike for a child who already balances and steers with confidence. Weight is the headline specification: the aluminum frame brings the bike to about 13 pounds, and published reviews of the GO 3 point to that low weight as the reason new pedalers manage starts, stops, and turns well. Brakes are two hand brakes with levers sized for small hands, and the rear lever is color-coded. A steering limiter and a chainguard come standard.

Specifications
Age grade4–6 years (manufacturer)
Wheel size16 in.

  • Steering limiter helps prevent oversteering falls

Learning Resources Gears Gears Gears Super Building Set tub and gears
Product image: eBay retail listing.

Who it’s forThe Super Building Set is a 150-piece gear construction set: bright gears, pillars, axles, and bases snap together, and a crank turns the whole build at once. Published parent reviews note that the gears share one standard size, and that sameness makes meshing gears easy for a four-year-old to figure out on the first builds. The set works with other Gears! Gears! Gears! sets, and it needs no batteries.

Specifications

  • Large piece count in a storage tub

#6 Best first game for pre-readers

ThinkFun Zingo!

Zingo! · ASIN B01DY818JG

ThinkFun Zingo game box
Product image: Retail listing.

Who it’s forZingo! runs bingo with pictures and words. A player slides the Zinger dispenser, two tiles appear, and players claim a tile that matches a square on their card. Reading is optional at the start: each tile pairs a picture with its word, and the cards have two sides at two difficulty levels. Published reviews pick Zingo! as a first game because rounds stay short and pre-readers play on equal footing with early readers.

Specifications

Model EI-3405 · ASIN B00486ZVC4

The Sneaky Snacky Squirrel Game board, spinner, and acorns
Product image: Amazon product media.

Who it’s forThis color matching game uses a spinner, a squirrel-shaped squeezer, and 20 colored acorns. A player spins, squeezes the acorn that matches the color, and sets it in their log. The first player to fill a log wins. Published reviews recommend it as a first board game: the rules take a minute to explain, a full game runs short, and the squeezer gives small hands a real job on every turn.

Specifications

IncludesSquirrel Squeezers, 20 colored acorns, 4 logs, spinner, tree-shaped game board (the box)

Checks before you buy

A few measurements and listings checks settle most of these purchases in advance.

Age grade and small parts

Every pick here carries a manufacturer age grade that covers four- and five-year-olds. Several sets contain small parts at that grade, including LEGO bricks, Quadrilla marbles, and game tiles. Follow the grade on the box, and store small-part sets where younger toddlers cannot reach them.

Bike fit

Size a bike by inseam and height. For the Strider 14x, the fit window is a 16–23 inch inseam. For the woom GO 3, the manufacturer listing starts at a 41-inch rider height. A helmet belongs on the same order as any bike.

Piece counts and expansion

Starter sets teach the system, and expansion sets add range. MAGNA-TILES, LEGO Classic, Gears!, and Quadrilla all expand across their own lines, and pieces from one line generally stay within that line. Buy the starter set first and add pieces after a few weeks of play shows the direction a child takes.

Tablet requirement

The Osmo kit needs a compatible iPad, and compatibility turns on the exact model. Check the model in your house against the Osmo compatibility list on the product page before ordering.

Specifications are based on published manufacturer and retailer information for the listed models. Check the current product listing for package contents and compatibility before ordering.
